Your Journey Starts Here.

That may be the #1 question people will ask you as embark on your college search.  We're here to help you answer.

Meet the Retrievers
Mia founded Create Freedom, a Baltimore non-profit that uses the arts to increase public awareness of human trafficking. Her goal? To make a difference and to help others to do the same.
A portrait of Mia Rickenbach in a lab setting. She is smiling and looking off camera and holding something in her hands that cannot be seen. Mia is wearing a blue and red polo shirt.
A portrait of Anna-Gifty Opoku-Agyeman, seated at a desk and smiling across to an off-camera location. Anna-Gifty's hair is curly and she;'s wearing a gold shirt under a sweater.
Anna transferred to UMBC to pursue math and economics. And she’s aimed high, co-founding a national conference that created the first formal space for black women in economics to benefit from the resources of a supportive network.

Ready for fun?
Students face the main stage at UMBC's Quadmania concert, which features multi-colored spotlights and in the foreground are silhouetted students dancing to music.
A group of UMBC students gather and pose excitedly for a photograph at the top of Federal Hill in Baltimore overlooking the Inner Harbor. Ships and skyscrapers can be seen in the background.
Wearing a gold number 11 Retriever uniform, UMBC basketball senior guard, K.J. Maura, shoots a layup in the march madness tournament. A hand of an opposing Virginia player can be seen in the background attempting to block the ball from behind.
Three hammocks are shown stacked vertically and tied between two trees near the UMBC library. On this sunny day, a student rises out of the top hammock to look around. The other two hammock occupants cannot be seen.
A large group of students is shown cheering from the sidelines during Homecoming's UMBC soccer game. At the center of the photograph is a young man who is standing up to loudly root on the Retrievers.

So, what’s your major?

One evening you could be playing Humans vs. Zombies and the next cheering on one of UMBC’s 17 Division I sports teams or watching Trevor Noah perform live. Here you can help save the Earth, experience new cultures, and make lifelong friends – all in the same day.

Whether you are just starting college, transferring from another school, or taking individual classes, at UMBC you will have access to the exceptional resources, stimulating teachers and individual attention that makes our community unique.

When you choose UMBC, you’re choosing a school that consistently receives top rankings from places like U.S. News & World Report, Forbes, Times Higher Education, and the Wall Street Journal. We’re proud of those accolades, but we earned them because we were already working hard for our students.

So are we.

Evan Avila ‘20, economics and political science
Evan presented his research and ideas to D.C. policymakers, and his work ultimately earned him the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship. He's also part of a team that's helped Baltimore community members secure $800,000 in tax refunds.
My classroom is a place where you're encouraged to move out of your comfort zone and look at things from multiple perspectives – even those with which we disagree. These are my favorite experiences, and what I love best about teaching here.
